Exhibitor Spotlight: Rainer Paul, ZELTWANGER Leak Testing & Automation
The Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo catches up with Rainer Paul, head of product management at ZELTWANGER holding to discuss the growing market for electromobility, big data management and what products they are displaying at The Battery Show 2017.
Rainer Paul became ZELTWANGER’s head of product management earlier this year. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, and business administration, and has years of experience under his belt working for global companies in various industrial sectors. Six of those years were spent working for a global market leader in automation equipment, where he held engineering and project management positions.
Which customer or market demands were the biggest drivers of your company's growth during the past three years?
On the one hand, we see a growing demand in fully automated test stations with connectivity to a data host, ERP, and CAQ systems. Collection of not only testing results, but also measurement values are now playing a more important role than ever before. The evaluation of this measurement data can either be done in our device´s statistical software or via data transfer to a data host, ERP, or CAQ in the systems directly. As a leak-testing equipment provider we have vast experience in the area of big data management. This data is connected to a product´s identification number together with other process data. By doing this we are able to have full-scale traceability, as well as the opportunity to further improve production processes and therefore reduce quality costs and improve productivity.
On the other hand, we see a growing market for electromobility, especially battery production. Within the past couple of years, several automotive suppliers as well as OEMs have begun planning and implementing battery production facilities, mainly in the US, Europe, and China. We have conducted several projects in the area of leak testing for automotive batteries. We have experience in leak testing of valves, pressure compensation elements, battery housings, and cooling systems.
Do you anticipate that those demands will continue to be your biggest growth drivers for the next three years, or are you anticipating new trends?
We are 100% sure that big data management and electromobility will be our biggest growth drivers in the future.
What are your areas of R&D focus, and what timeline do you anticipate for bringing your next new products to market? Can you tell us anything about those products?
The above mentioned is the reason why we put big efforts in improving our products in this regard. We offer all major data interfaces including OPC-UA in our latest device, the ZEDeco. We are in the global standardization board for this new interface standard in order to secure the best possible connectivity of leak-testing devices. We offer the best connectivity and statistical evaluation possibilities in all devices from the ZED series. Including our experience in process automation, we are able to offer highly productive and fast measurements.
What new trends do you anticipate and what market demands do you see evolving/changing over the next five years?
The trends mentioned above will be the ones which shape the future of us as a provider of leak-testing equipment and automation technology.
What would you say are the key challenges and opportunities currently faced by the industry?
The changes we face due to electromobility will change a whole industry sector. Jobs we have today will not be there in the future – we are in front of a knowledge shift. People need to consider the trends and need to adapt to these changes fast. A lot of companies are still discussing, very few are actually acting. The ones that are able to quickly adapt to these challenges will grow alongside new and unexpected market contributors.
What is your company's approach to strategic partnerships or joint ventures, and what kinds of partnerships are you most open to exploring?
We are open to strategic partnerships in the battery production area. Here, we can built on an already existing experience with leak testing, as well as automation.
What products will you be featuring at the show this year and what response are you expecting?
We will be showcasing:
- ZEDmod, our multi-channel leak testing device with full connectivity and statistical functions
- ZEDbase+, our two- channel basis device with full connectivity and statistical functions
- ZEDeco, our new single-channel device designated for the automation industry with an integrated OPC-UA server
- ZEDsatellite, our small measuring unit which can be used as a slave, integrated directly at the process.
Why are you exhibiting and what connections do you hope to make there?
We are not only searching for new customers in the area of battery production, but also for strategic partnerships. Strategic partnerships are important to us to stay in the pole position, as well as helping the partner to do so.
ZELTWANGER Leak Testing & Automotive LP will be exhibiting at The Battery Show at booth 2051.
